Systems Engineer

The Company

Ingles Markets began in 1963 as a single supermarket and has since grown into a regional grocery store chain with just under 200 retail locations operating in 6 southeastern states, a 1.6-million-square foot distribution center, two truck fleets, and a milk processing plant. Ingles Markets’ headquarters and distribution center are located just 15 minutes outside of Asheville, NC in the town of Black Mountain.

The Position

The Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing complex systems and infrastructure that support the functioning of the company's technological environment. They play a crucial role in ensuring the seamless operation, performance, and reliability of hardware, software, and networks, while considering both technical and company requirements. This is a hybrid-working role and will require days in office. 

 

Hard Skill Requirements: 

  • Linux and Windows administration experience 

  • Scripting and coding (Bash, PowerShell, Python, YAML, Ansible) 

  • Virtualization: VMware vSphere, KVM (qemu), Cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS, Azure) 

  • Working knowledge of HA/Clustering/DR 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with multiple teams across the company to design and architect complex systems, including hardware, software, networks, and cloud infrastructure. Balance performance, scalability, security, and cost-effectiveness while considering company needs. 

  • Contribute to implementing and deploying systems, ensuring proper installation, configuration, and integration. Test and troubleshoot systems to identify and resolve any issues that may arise during the implementation phase. 

  • Deploy and manage VMware vSphere environments to ensure optimal performance and reliability. 

  • Implement cross-application integrations using bash, python, ansible, or similar solutions to streamline processes and enhance system functionality. 

  • Monitor system performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement optimization strategies to enhance overall system efficiency, responsiveness, and reliability. This may involve performance tuning, load balancing, and capacity planning. 

  • Integrate security best practices into system designs, configurations, and processes. Implement and maintain security measures such as encryption, access controls, and intrusion detection systems to safeguard sensitive data and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations. 

  • Ensure uptime and availability of systems by planning and implementing high-availability practices as needed by the company. Ensuring hardware is maintained regularly and support contracts are up to date to provide repairs in a timely manner. 

 

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science or related field of education requirements may be substituted with equivalent work experience. 

  • 5+ years designing and implementing complex systems and/or integrated systems within IT. 

  • Working knowledge of: HA/Clustering/DR Design, Network Communications, Virtualization (VMware, KVM) and cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS, Azure) 

  • Strong organizational skills, problem-solving, and communication skills. Able to work on projects as part of a team and individually 

  • Project management skills to handle multiple tasks and priorities effectively. 

  • Must live in AL, GA, NC, SC, TN, or VA.
